Every situation is unique. "A credit freeze is just for credit-related issues," says Hanson. "There are a number of identity theft type cases that aren't revolved [around] your credit." So be sure to assess your options – and the time and financial cost – before requesting a freeze. When you do, however, a credit freeze could be just the tool you need to protect yourself or a loved one.

Don’t give you a written contract. The contract should include the company’s name and address, a detailed description of their services, how long the service will take, and the total cost. By law, a credit repair company cannot perform any services until you’ve signed a written contract and had three days to think it over. You can cancel the contract within those three days without paying any fees.

You can file a dispute with Experian on its website, or by contacting the number on your Experian credit report. You can also file a dispute without a credit report by sending a letter to the bureau’s National Consumer Assistance Center at P.O. Box 4500, Allen, TX 75013.
