CyberGhost has been around since 2011 and has come out strongly as a supporter of "civil rights, a free society, and an uncensored Internet culture." We really liked how the company specifically showcases, on their Web site, how folks normally prevented from accessing such important services as Facebook and YouTube can bring those services into their lives via a VPN.

In the latency tests, Hide.me performed well, increasing latency by 171.4 percent (yes, that's a good score for these tests!). These folks have been around since 2010, and don't log anything. They provide a generous five connections, a connection kill switch feature, and some good online documentation and security guidance. Hide.me's app falls into a weird space between being too simple and too complicated. Or rather, it's so simple that it becomes complicated. Basic actions, like changing servers, are almost hidden, but the app supports complex activities like fallback protocols and custom scripts. That's sure to excite security wonks, but average users aren't going to bother. In short, the app needs a refresh.
L2TP/IPsec (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol). This is a combination of PPTP and Cisco’s L2F protocol. The concept of this protocol is sound — it uses keys to establish a secure connection on each end of your data tunnel — but the execution isn’t very safe. The addition of the IPsec protocol improves security a bit, but there are reports of NSA’s alleged ability to break this protocol and see what’s being transmitted. No matter if those are actually true, the fact that there’s a debate at all is perhaps enough to avoid this as well.
