How this tool works
The cumulative GPA calculator computes a student's overall grade point average by weighting each course's grade points by its credit hours. Formula: Cumulative GPA = Sum of (Grade Points x Credit Hours per course) / Total Credit Hours Attempted. Standard US letter-to-GPA conversion on the 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. The tool supports both plus/minus grading and a 4.3-scale variant (A+ = 4.3) used at some institutions. Numeric grades are converted using a configurable conversion table. Adding new courses to an existing record uses: New Cumulative GPA = ((Previous GPA x Previous Credits) + New Grade Points) / (Previous Credits + New Credits). Key assumption: pass/fail, incomplete (I), and withdrawal (W) grades are excluded from the GPA calculation by default, consistent with common institutional policy. Mark courses with these grades as excluded manually if your institution's policy differs. Edge case: graduate programs typically require a minimum 3.0 GPA for satisfactory standing, and some programs treat a grade below B as effectively failing regardless of its numeric GPA weight. The tool does not automatically apply academic standing thresholds, which vary by program and institution -- check your program's academic standing policy separately.
Worked example
Past semesters: Fall 2023: 3.4 GPA, 15 credits = 51.0 quality points Spring 2024: 3.1 GPA, 16 credits = 49.6 quality points Fall 2024: 3.6 GPA, 15 credits = 54.0 quality points Total quality points so far: 154.6 Total credits: 46 Current cumulative GPA: 154.6 / 46 = 3.36 Target: 3.5, planning 15 credits next semester: needed_gpa = (3.5 x 61 - 154.6) / 15 = (213.5 - 154.6) / 15 = 58.9 / 15 = 3.93 A 3.93 next semester is required. That is achievable, but leaves very little room for anything belo

Frequently asked questions
How is cumulative GPA calculated?
Sum the quality points (grade points times credit hours) across all terms, then divide by total credit hours attempted. A B (3.0) in a 4-credit course contributes 12 quality points. Add up all quality points from all semesters, divide by total credits, and that is your cumulative GPA. Repeated courses may be handled differently depending on your school's grade replacement or grade forgiveness policy.
How many semesters does it take to raise my GPA?
Because earlier credits are locked in, raising a low GPA takes sustained effort over many semesters. A student with a 2.5 GPA after 60 credits would need a perfect 4.0 for 30 more credits just to reach 3.0. The calculator shows the exact semesters required at any target grade.
What if the required GPA is above 4.0?
The calculator will flag this as \\\\\\\"cannot reach target in one semester\\\\\\\" and show the minimum number of semesters needed at 4.0 performance. This is the honest answer, knowing it early lets you adjust your timeline rather than chase an impossible semester.
How does GPA affect graduate school admissions?
Most graduate programs publish minimum GPA requirements, commonly 3.0 for general admission and 3.5 for competitive programs. Some programs look at the last 60 credits separately. Check the specific program requirements and use the target solver to see if your trajectory puts you in range.
What if I took courses at multiple institutions?
Enter each school's credits and GPA in separate semester rows. The calculator treats them as equivalent, which is how most transfer GPA calculations work. Some institutions calculate transfer GPA separately, so confirm with the registrar how your transcripts will be combined.
How do I calculate the GPA I need to graduate with honors?
Set the target GPA to the honors threshold (often 3.5 for cum laude, 3.7 for magna, 3.9 for summa) and enter your planned remaining credits. The calculator returns the required semester GPA. If it exceeds 4.0, you can also see the minimum remaining credits that would make the target achievable.
