How this tool works

Enter each course's letter grade (or percentage) and credit hours. The calculator converts grades to grade points, multiplies each by credit hours to get quality points, then divides total quality points by total credit hours for your semester GPA. If you enter your prior cumulative GPA and credit hours, the tool also previews how this semester shifts your overall GPA.

Worked example

Suppose you take English (A, 3 credits), History (B, 3 credits), and Biology (A-, 4 credits). Quality points: English 4.0 x 3 = 12.0, History 3.0 x 3 = 9.0, Biology 3.7 x 4 = 14.8. Total quality points = 35.8. Total credits = 10. Semester GPA = 35.8 / 10 = 3.58. If your prior cumulative GPA was 3.2 over 50 credits, new cumulative = (3.2 x 50 + 35.8) / 60 = 195.8 / 60 = 3.26.

Frequently asked questions

  • How is semester GPA calculated?

Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points. Sum all quality points and divide by total credit hours for the semester.

  • What GPA do I need for Dean's List?

Most institutions require a 3.5 or 3.7 semester GPA with a full credit load and no incomplete grades. Requirements vary by school -- check your registrar's standards.

  • How does one bad grade affect my cumulative GPA?

Use the cumulative GPA fields to see the exact impact. A single failing grade in a 3-credit course can drop a 3.5 cumulative GPA by 0.1-0.2 points depending on total credits earned.
