How Our Loan Calculator Works

Enter three numbers: the loan amount (principal), the annual interest rate, and the loan term in months or years. Hit calculate and you get your monthly payment immediately, along with a full amortization schedule showing how each payment splits between principal and interest.

The math behind it is the standard amortization formula used by every bank and credit union. You do not need a financial background to use it. Fill in the fields, read the results, and make a confident decision.

Why Monthly Payment Is Only Part of the Story

Most borrowers focus on the monthly payment. Lenders know this and sometimes structure loans with longer terms to keep monthly figures attractive while loading you up on total interest. Our calculator shows both numbers side by side so you can see the full picture.

A $20,000 personal loan at 8% interest over 3 years carries a monthly payment of about $627 and total interest of roughly $2,572. Stretch that same loan to 5 years and the monthly payment drops to $406, but total interest climbs to $4,332. You save $221 per month and spend $1,760 more in the end. That tradeoff is visible the moment you change the term slider.

Common Loan Types You Can Calculate

Personal loans. Unsecured loans for home improvements, medical bills, travel, or any personal expense. Rates typically range from 6% to 36% depending on credit score and lender.

Auto loans. Most car loans run 36 to 72 months. A shorter term means higher monthly payments but significantly less interest. Run both scenarios before stepping into a dealership.

Home equity loans. Fixed-rate loans secured against the equity in your home. Rates are usually lower than personal loans because the collateral reduces lender risk.

Student loans. Federal loans have fixed rates set by Congress each year. Private student loans vary by lender and creditworthiness. Use this calculator to compare repayment scenarios before consolidating.

Small business loans. Term loans for equipment, inventory, or expansion. The same amortization math applies whether you are a sole trader or a limited company.

How to Use the Results

Once you have your monthly payment figure, compare it against your actual take-home income. A common rule of thumb is to keep total debt payments below 36% of gross monthly income. If your result pushes you above that threshold, either increase the down payment, extend the term slightly, or look for a lower rate before committing.

If you are rate shopping, run the calculator with each lender's quote. A half-percent difference on a $30,000 loan over five years saves over $400 in total interest. That is money that stays in your pocket.

You can also use the amortization schedule to plan overpayments. Many loans allow extra principal payments that reduce the outstanding balance and cut the total interest you pay. Enter the base term, note the principal balance after 12 months, then calculate what happens if you add $100 per month to principal. The interest savings compound over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How accurate is the loan calculator?

Very accurate for fixed-rate loans. It uses the standard actuarial amortization formula. Variable-rate loans are harder to project because the rate changes over time, but you can use the current rate to get a realistic starting estimate.

  • Does using this calculator affect my credit score?

No. This is an informational tool only. No credit check is performed, no data is sent to lenders, and nothing is recorded in any credit bureau.

  • What is a good interest rate for a personal loan?

That depends on your credit profile and the lender. Borrowers with excellent credit (720+) often qualify for rates below 10%. Rates above 20% are common for fair-credit borrowers. Always compare at least three offers before accepting any loan.

  • Can I calculate a loan with a balloon payment?

This calculator covers standard fully amortizing loans. Balloon loans, where a large lump sum is due at the end of the term, require a different calculation. We cover that in our balloon loan calculator.

  • Why does my bank quote a slightly different monthly payment?

Banks sometimes include origination fees, insurance, or rounding conventions that alter the payment by a small amount. The figure here is the pure principal-plus-interest payment. Review the full loan agreement for all fees before signing.

  • How do I lower my monthly payment?

Three levers: borrow less, extend the term, or reduce the interest rate. Improving your credit score before applying, making a larger down payment, or adding a creditworthy co-signer can each help you qualify for a lower rate.
