Fish Age Calculator
Convert your pet fish's age to human equivalent years and find out their life stage with care recommendations.

Care note
Feed once or twice daily, avoid overfeeding. Goldfish produce significant waste and need strong filtration.
This calculator uses a proportional lifespan model to estimate a fish's age in human-equivalent years. The formula is: human_age = (fish_age / species_avg_lifespan) x 80. Each species has a different average captive lifespan, from 2 years for guppies to 30 years for koi. Life stages are assigned based on age milestones: Fry (under 4 weeks), Juvenile (4 weeks to 6 months), Young Adult (6 months to 2 years), Adult (2-5 years or up to 80% of expected lifespan), and Senior (last 20% of expected lifespan).
How this tool works

Worked example
A 5-year-old goldfish with an average lifespan of 12 years: human equivalent = (5/12) x 80 = 33 human years, placing it in the Adult life stage. It has used about 42% of its expected lifespan. Well-cared-for goldfish in large ponds routinely surpass 15 years.
Frequently asked questions
How long do pet fish live?
Lifespan varies greatly by species. Bettas live 2-5 years; guppies 1-3 years; neon tetras 5-10 years; goldfish 10-20 years; koi 25-35+ years. Water quality, diet, and tank size are the most important factors.
Can goldfish really live for decades?
Yes. Goldfish in well-maintained ponds or large aquariums routinely live 15-20 years, with some reaching 25+. The short lifespan of carnival goldfish results from improper housing and feeding, not genetics.
What does 'senior' mean for a fish?
As fish age, they may show reduced appetite, slower movement, faded coloration, and increased susceptibility to disease. Senior fish benefit from softer foods, stable water temperature, and reduced current in the tank.
