Annual veterinary checkups with dental examination. Monitor weight, provide enrichment, and maintain a consistent diet of hay, greens, and limited pellets.
Rabbit aging models are approximations. Individual rabbits age differently based on breed, genetics, diet, spay/neuter status, and living conditions. Always consult your veterinarian for health assessments specific to your rabbit.
How this tool works
This calculator converts your rabbit's age to human-equivalent years using a well-established rabbit aging model. Rabbits develop rapidly in their first year, reaching sexual maturity early -- the first rabbit year equals roughly 18 human years. The second year adds about 10 human years (reaching 28 total). From year three onward, each rabbit year adds approximately 8 human years. The tool also classifies your rabbit into one of seven life stages (Baby through Senior) and adjusts life expectancy based on size, since smaller breeds tend to live longer than larger ones.
Worked example
A 3-year-old medium rabbit is in the Adult life stage. Using the conversion model: the first year equals 18 human years, the second year adds 10 (28 total), and the third year adds 8, giving 36 human-equivalent years. With a medium rabbit life expectancy of 8-12 years, this rabbit has used about 30% of its expected lifespan.
Frequently asked questions
How old is my rabbit in human years?
Rabbits age rapidly in their first year (roughly 18 human-equivalent years) then slow down. A 3-year-old rabbit is in early adult life, similar to a human in their late 20s. A 7-year-old rabbit is a senior, comparable to a person in their late 60s.
When is a rabbit considered senior?
Most veterinarians consider rabbits senior at 7+ years for medium breeds. Large breeds may show senior health needs as early as 5. Senior rabbits are at higher risk for dental disease, arthritis, kidney issues, and GI problems.
How long do rabbits live as pets?
Well-cared-for house rabbits commonly live 8-12 years. The key factors are spaying/neutering (significantly extends lifespan), diet (unlimited hay, fresh greens), dental care, and indoor housing to avoid predators and weather exposure.
