How this calculator works

For each order, the tool subtracts the payment processing fee (a percentage of order value plus a fixed $0.30) and the per-order advertising cost from your revenue. It then subtracts product cost (COGS) to produce gross profit per order. Monthly gross profit is multiplied by order volume, then the fixed plan fee and app costs are subtracted to produce monthly net profit. If you use a third-party payment processor instead of Shopify Payments, an additional transaction fee applies at the rate for your plan tier. The plan comparison table re-runs the same volume for all three standard plans so you can see which tier nets the highest profit, and solves the upgrade break-even where the lower processing rate finally pays for the higher plan fee.

Monthly net: $5,579. Net margin: 55.8%. The Shopify plan ($105/month, 2.6%) produces $36 less at this volume. Upgrade break-even: $21,996/month in revenue.

Frequently asked questions

  • What are Shopify's 2026 plan prices and processing rates?

As of 2026, the three standard plans are: Basic at $39/month with Shopify Payments at 2.9% + $0.30; Shopify at $105/month with 2.6% + $0.30; Advanced at $399/month with 2.4% + $0.30. Third-party processor transaction fees are 2%, 1%, and 0.5% respectively. Verify current pricing at shopify.com/pricing as Shopify updates these periodically.

  • When does upgrading from Basic to Shopify plan pay off?

Typically around $22,000 per month in revenue for an average order value near $50. The lower processing rate on the Shopify plan saves $0.15 per order at that AOV, and you need enough orders to accumulate $66 in savings to offset the higher monthly fee. Use this calculator to find the exact break-even for your AOV.

  • What is Shopify's transaction fee?

An additional per-order fee charged when you use a payment processor other than Shopify Payments. It is 2% on Basic, 1% on Shopify, and 0.5% on Advanced. At $50 AOV and 200 monthly orders, this adds $200/month in fees on the Basic plan. Using Shopify Payments eliminates this fee entirely.

  • Does this include Shopify app costs?

Yes. Enter your total monthly Shopify app subscription costs in the app costs field. Common apps for email marketing, reviews, and inventory can add $50-$300/month and materially affect net margin at lower sales volumes.

  • What counts as ad spend per order?

Your total paid acquisition cost divided by monthly orders. If you spend $1,000 on Google and Meta Ads and generate 200 orders, your ad spend per order is $5. This per-order cost comes directly out of gross margin on every sale.

  • Can I model Shopify Payments versus a third-party processor side-by-side?

Toggle the \\\"Use Shopify Payments\\\" option off to see the impact of a third-party processor. The tool applies the transaction fee for your current plan on top of the standard processing rate, giving you the full cost difference in dollars per month.
