Frog Age Calculator

Convert your pet frog's age to human equivalent years and find out their life stage with care recommendations.

Human equivalent age

13.7 years

Life stage

Young Adult

Life expectancy

15-20 years

White's Tree Frog

Care note

White's Tree Frogs need 60-80% humidity, a temperature of 75-85°F, and a diet of crickets and roaches dusted with calcium powder.

This calculator uses a proportional lifespan model to estimate a frog's age in human-equivalent years. The formula is: human_age = (frog_age / species_avg_lifespan) x 80. Each species has a different average captive lifespan, from 6.5 years for American Green Tree Frogs to 17.5 years for White's Tree Frogs. Life stages are assigned proportionally: Tadpole (under ~4% of lifespan), Froglet (4-7%), Juvenile (7-12%), Young Adult (12-30%), Adult (30-75%), and Senior (last 25%).

How this tool works

This calculator uses a proportional lifespan model to estimate a frog's age in human-equivalent years. The formula is: human_age = (frog_age / species_avg_lifespan) x 80. Worked example

A 5-year-old White's Tree Frog with an average lifespan of 17.5 years: human equivalent = (5/17.5) x 80 = 22.9 human years, placing it in the Young Adult life stage. At this stage, the frog is healthy and active, roughly analogous to a young adult human. White's Tree Frogs commonly live 15-20 years with proper humidity and diet.

Frequently asked questions

  • How long do pet frogs live?

Lifespan varies by species. African Dwarf Frogs live 5-10 years; Pacman Frogs 7-10 years; Dart Frogs 10-15 years; White's Tree Frogs 15-20 years. Proper humidity, temperature, and diet are critical for reaching full lifespan.

  • What is the froglet stage?

After hatching as tadpoles, frogs undergo metamorphosis over 1-4 months, developing legs and absorbing their tail. During this froglet stage, they transition from fully aquatic to semi-terrestrial, requiring different care than either tadpoles or adult frogs.

  • Are dart frogs poisonous in captivity?

No. Wild dart frogs derive their toxicity from their natural diet of specific beetles and mites. Captive-bred dart frogs fed a diet of fruit flies and springtails are completely non-toxic and safe to handle briefly.
